HIS: Q4 Touchscreen Panel Shipments To Increase

El Segundo, Calif. — Touchscreen notebook sales may be set for expansion as IHS is forecasting an increase in shipment of touchscreen panels in the fourth quarter.

IHS expects 4.9 million panels to ship in the fourth quarter, up from the 4.4 million that shipped in the third quarter and 4.3 million in the second.

The research firm said new form factors, such as hybrid tablet/laptops, and the use of Intel’s Atom Bay Trail processor in new laptops will help increase sales going forward.

The research firm also noted that sales of traditional clamshell laptops declined in the third quarter, with just 63.4 percent using that design. This is down from 75.2 percent in the second quarter. Hybrid types comprised 16.9 percent of the market, up from 11.5 percent, and tablets with full notebook capability rose to 12.7 percent from 5.5 percent.

Subsidies from Intel and Microsoft are behind the increase in the tablet and hybrid categories, IHS said.
