hhgregg Joins Black Friday Midnight Fray

Indianapolis –
hhgregg has joined the growing pool of retailers that will open their doors at
midnight on Black Friday.

The multiregional
CE and appliance chain will be open from midnight to 9 p.m. the day after
Thanksgiving, and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 26.

“We are grateful
to our dedicated employees for supporting the decision to open early on Black
Friday,” said president/CEO Dennis May. “We are a very family-focused company,
and we understand that our extended store hours place a burden on employees.
However, we are staffing our stores strategically on Black Friday, and
throughout the holiday season, to ensure that all of our employees have
adequate time with their families.”

Best Buy CEO Brian
Dunn similarly expressed regrets over his company’s decision to move up its
traditional 4 a.m. opening to 12 a.m. in response to similar moves by Target,
Kohl’s and other strip-mall neighbors. “I feel terrible because it impacts,” he
said at a Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) conference last week in San
Francisco, as quoted by the chain’s hometown

Pioneer Press

. “It’ll
change some Thanksgiving plans for some of our employees. We were going to be
open at much more civilized hour, like 3 or 4 (a.m.). We made a decision at
Best Buy that we need to be where our customers are. I know that the decision
has been a bit controversial with some of our folks. But the truth of the
matter is, the customers will be out there, lined up, for that midnight
opening.”

In addition to the
early opening, hhgregg said it will pre-announce its Black Friday doorbuster
specials on Monday, Nov.  14, via email
and on the company’s Facebook page.
