Gaming Championships Head To CES, LA

Arlington, Va. – The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced that the ATI/AMD Cyber X Games Championships – considered by to some to be the world’s biggest gamer festival — will move to CES, Jan. 8-11 in Las Vegas.

The event is expected to draw ‘thousands of the world’s top computer and video game players,’ who will compete for a share of $600,000 in cash and prizes over the course of several qualifying tournaments at the ATI/AMD Cyber X Games Championships. The $100,000 first prize for the winning team of the Counter-Strike competition was said by event organizers to be ‘the largest purse in gaming history.’

The festival will also be a showcase for the most advanced computer and video gaming hardware from the world’s top manufactures. Cyber X Gaming is currently holding regional qualification tournaments across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The original finals, scheduled in Orlando Florida were moved to Las Vegas to give attendees the opportunity to also attend CES to see the newest consumer electronics.

Top players from all corners of the world face offer in the Stardust hotel casino in FPS and RTS combat. The best-of-the-best will battle it out in Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament 2003, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, America’s Army and Warcraft III.

According to a spokesman with CEA, video gaming will have an increased presence at this year’s show, with a number of exhibitor announcements slated to be made next month.

Shortly after the Cyber X Games announcement, the rival Ultimate Gamers Expo (UGE) announced that its Expo would debut Aug. 20th-22nd, 2004 in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center. Ultimate Gamers Expo is billed as a first-time ‘massive gaming festival for the general public’ where attendees can test upcoming and current games, participate in competitions.
