company introduced Tuesday a new version of its Flip pocket-camcorder category with the introduction of the "Flip Slide HD" - a Flip-style camcorder with a touchscreen monitor that slides into a horizontal, tabletop viewing position for playback.
The 3-inch-wide touchscreen operation provides a simple-to-use menu that presents thumbnail images of recorded scenes with a touch.
At the same time, the camcorder keeps "the simplicity, fun and picture quality" of the previous Flip Mino HD and Flip Ultra HD camcorders, while adding the sliding monitor panel with touchscreen flexibility.
The Flip Slide HD is similar in size and shape to the Flip Ultra line, but steps up the onboard storage capacity to 16GBs (double the recording memory) for 12 hours worth of total storage time.
The idea is to provide enough space so that users can keep favorite scenes in the camcorder's memory so it can be carried along with users as "a portable brag book," enabling video memories to be shared with others on the go.
The company said the idea for the sliding-screen feature came out of user feedback indicating that many Flip users carry videos around with them, using the camcorder as a playback source to share images and scenes with friends and family.
Users expressed an interest in having the ability to carry more videos with them where ever they go, the company said.
Also included with the Flip Slide HD are stereo speakers, headphone jack, HDMI jack, built-in USB connector, volume control and FlipShare software. All other features will remain the same as those on the Flip Ultra HD.
The latter has been enhanced with new Flip Channels functionality for easy camcorder downloading of recorded images.
The Flip Slide HD will be available April 13 at a $279 suggested retail. Included are a wrist strap and a pouch.
Retailers and e-tailers will sell a silver and white version of the Flip Slide HD, but more personalized versions will be available to consumers who order directly from the Flip Web site. There, purchasers will find a design gallery with thousands of color and pattern options, or users can upload and create their own designs.
To date, the company said it has sold 4 million Flip camcorders and wrapped up 2009 as "a leader in the shoot-and-share" category.
The Flip Slide HD will launch with retail partners including Best Buy and Best Buy.com, Walmart and Walmart.com, rolling out "to other brick-and-mortar retailers as we go," the company said.
Cisco is working with Best Buy to offer an in-store kiosk to promote the Flip Slide HD, Mino HD and Ultra HD models. The kiosk will include video introducing shoppers to the Flip brand with separate spotlights explaining the features of each model.
To promote the Flip line, Cisco will replicate the successful "Do You Flip?" fall TV and online ad campaign that utilized user-generated videos in 40 different 10- and 15-second spots.
As a continuation of that starting in April, the company will ask Flip users to submit videos they've recorded with their Flip camcorders showing how they use them. The Flip Slide HD and the Mino HD will be presented in an end tag on all of the spring commercials.
The company will also include a stand-alone Slide online campaign under the Do You Flip? banner.
