Flat-Panel Manufacturing To See Uptick In 2010

Austin, Texas – TFT LCD panel manufacturers have dramatically
turned to using their Gen 5 plants to make netbook and laptop panels.

The shift from using Gen 4 to Gen 5 fabs means higher efficiency
and capacity for the vendors because the Gen 5 plants can create more panels
from each substrate, said a DisplaySearch report.

DisplaySearch expects panel demand to grow in 2010, and
manufacturing capacity will follow suit with total area input increasing 1.7
percent in the first quarter. Notebook panel growth alone will jump 4.5
percent; stand-alone PC monitors will grow 1.1 percent, while TV panels will be
up a marginal 0.7 percent.

With portable computer display manufacturing moving into the Gen
5 category, more firms are pushing their flat-panel manufacturing into the Gen
6 plants with TV panel production going into Gen 7 and higher facilities,
DisplaySearch said.

The older Gen 4 and Gen 3 plants are now being used for small-
and medium-size panel manufacturing.
