Digital broadcast copy protection will be the next issue the Federal Communications Commission will tackle in the digital TV transition.
At the same meeting where it made its DTV tuner mandate, the commission reported that private industry negotiations have reached a consensus on technical “broadcast flag” standard.
The flag would limit copying of some programming aired by broadcast-TV stations, but there is no universal agreement on its use and implementation.
The FCC is calling for comments on the issue (Notice of Proposed Rulemaking FCC02-231) by October 30, 2002.
