Round Rock, Texas – Dell cited falling PC sales for its lower second quarter revenue and earnings.
The PC maker generated $14.5 billion in revenue for the quarter ended Aug. 3 with a GAAP net income of $732 million. Revenue and net income was down 8 percent and 18 percent, respectively compared to the same period last year.
Dell’s consumer business took a 22 percent hit during the quarter, falling to $2.6 billion with an operating income of $14 million. The company is shifting its emphasis away from the consumer market and refocusing its efforts to enterprise solutions.
Dell blamed the PC sales drop on customers cutting back on computer purchases prior to the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system this October. To help limit this buying pattern Microsoft has rolled out a program offering $14.99 Windows 8 upgrades to anyone who buys a Windows 7 equipped PC for the remainder of the year.
