NEW YORK — Cyber Monday was a bigger hit than ever, with two surveys showing strong double-digit sales growth.

There was 16 percent year over year sales increases, hitting a record $2.29 billion, Adobe Digital Index reported. It was the fifth consecutive day of record online sales, beginning with Thanksgiving.

“Retailers earned 10 percent of their annual sales in just the last five days [Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday], an increase of 26 percent year over year,” said Tamara Gaffney, principal analyst for Adobe.

Of Monday’s $2.29 billion tally, 42 percent was spent at online-only retailers. A record 18.3 percent, or some $419 million in transactions, was made on smartphones and tablets on Cyber Monday, an increase of 80 percent over last year, the company said.

In contrast, sales referrals through social media were flat year over year at 2 percent of total Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday sales.

Adobe’s online shopping data is based on the analysis of nearly 900 million visits to 2,000 retail websites on Cyber Monday and more than three billion visits since Thanksgiving Day.

Shopatron, provider of Cloud-based e-commerce order management, reported record-breaking Cyber Monday sales with a year-over-year GMV increase of 52 percent.

This is according to data collected by Shopatron’s patented Order Exchange, which powers the e-commerce orders for more than 1,000 branded manufacturers and leading multichannel retailers.

Fueled by the rise in smartphone usage, the biggest online shopping day in history also included a record number of mobile transactions, accounting for 20 percent of Cyber Monday order volume — a 54 percent increase over last year.

Additionally, promotional strategies remained an important piece of Cyber Monday sales, with 46 percent of Shopatron Manufacturer orders being tied to a promotion. More specifically, 37 percent of Shopatron Manufacturer orders were tied to a free shipping promotion, indicating that eliminating shipping costs is an effective way to drive online sales.

Shopatron’s e-commerce order management platform also broke two records of its own this Cyber Monday: capturing the most GMV and number of orders in a single day throughout the company’s 12- year history, the company said.
