Consumer Cellular Launches Handset Payment Program

Portland, Ore. –MVNO Consumer Cellular, which targets the 50-plus age group with no-contract postpaid service, is joining a growing number of carriers offering handset payment plans to consumers buying cellphones without a service contract.

The company’s EasyPay financing program is targeted to purchasers of smartphones priced at $300 and up. Consumers pay $100 up front and $25 per month on top of their normal monthly service payment until the remaining balance is paid. No interest is charged.

The $300 LG 930 is the first smartphone eligible to purchase under the payment program, and a second LG model, the Escape, will qualify when it is released in early August. More qualifying smartphones priced $300 and up will be introduced later in 2013 and next year, the company said.

The LG930 features Android 4.0.4  OS, 4.5-inch HD display with 1280×720 resolution, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front camera, 1080p video storage, 4GB of internal memory, 32GB microSD Card slot, battery delivering up to 7 hours of talk time, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Details of the Escape were unavailable.

The company sells service direct to consumers, through more than 800 Sears stores, and through 265 RadioShack franchise stores, having expanded beyond direct selling in 2010 with the launch of sales through the RadioShack franchise locations.
