ComScore: iOS Share Making Gains Against Android

Reston, Va. – The Android OS remained the dominant OS among smartphone users in the U.S. at the end of 2012, but Apple’s iOS share is creeping up at a slightly faster pace, ComScore reported.

For the three-month period ending December 2012, an average of 53.4 percent of smartphone users ages 13 and older used the Android OS, up 0.9 percentage points from the average for the three-month period ending in September (see table).

Apple’s iOS share grew during that time by a full 2 percentage points to 36.3 percent, likely due in large part to the launch of the iPhone 5.

BlackBerry’s OS lost 2 percentage points to hit 6.4 percent share, and Microsoft lost 0.7 percentage points to 2.9 percent. Symbian’s share held steady at 0.6 percent.

Among smartphone brands, Apple remained on top, followed by Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG, in that order (see table).

In the latest three-month period, Apple grew its share by 2 percentage points to 36.3 percent compared with the previous three-month period. Samsung’s share rose 2.3 percentage points to 21 percent, while HTC’s share dropped 1.8 percentage points to 10.2 percent. Motorola’s share slipped 0.7 percentage points to 9.1 percent, and LG gained 0.5 percentage points to 7.1 percent.

Total smartphone penetration grew 5 percentage points to 54 percent of all cellphone subscribers in the latest three-month period compared with the prior quarter. A total of 125.9 million people ages 13 and older owned a smartphone in the quarter at the end of the year.
