DALLAS — CompUSA will open 17 combination CompUSA/Good Guys stores in California by June 1.
The new concept, orginally reported last month in TWICE offers a mix of merchandise from both retail chains, and capitalizes on the “expertise and buying power” of their recently combined merchandising and buying departments.
“Our new combination unleashes the power of technology for our customers through a broader range of products,” said CompUSA CEO Larry Mondry. “Product and technology convergence is continually increasing and customers are looking for answers.” CompUSA specializes in selling personal computers, wireless products and related accessories while West Coast subsidiary Good Guys is a high-end specialty A/V chain.
COO Tony Weiss discussed the combination stores, then in test phase, during TWICE’s Retail Roundtable, held during CES in January. “We’re pretty encouraged and excited about it,” he reported (see TWICE, March 7, p. 18).
The company will convert 14 Good Guys locations and 3 CompUSA locations into combination stores, and will also close one Good Guys location upon the expiration of its lease.
The merging of the company’s merchandising departments comes seven months after Good Guys’ buying, marketing and advertising functions were consolidated and moved to CompUSA headquarters here.
Mondry said the changes represent “the next steps in our Good Guys retail strategy … and reflect the refinement of our overall business model.” Rick Fountain, Good Guys’ president/COO, added that “We’re moving in a direction that shows we’re listening to our customers and that we’re their best choice for technology and high-end consumer electronics.”
CompUSA, privately held by Mexican conglomerate Grupo Sanborns, acquired Good Guys in December 2003.
