CES 2011: AT&T Readies 2 HSPA+ Android Phones

Las Vegas – AT&T unveiled two
HSPA+ Android smartphones here at its developer’s conference, where the carrier
announced the Motorola Atrix with dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and the
Samsung Infuse with large 4.5-inch screen.

Pricing and availability weren’t
announced.

The Motorola Atrix features
Android 2.2 OS, 1GHz Tegra processor, and 10.9mm depth.

The Samsung Infuse features
4.5-inch touchscreen using proprietary new Super AMOLED Plus display
technology. It features 1.2GHz processor, Android 2.2, Samsung’s TouchWiz
interface, 8-megapixel HD camera/camcorder, and front-facing 1.3-megapixel
camera.

LG will bring the Optimus 2X, the
world’s first smartphone with dual-core processor, to the U.S. around March as
a 3G GSM/HSPA device,  LG Electronics
president/CTO Skott Ahn told TWICE.

Ahn declined to say whether the
phone would operate on the T-Mobile or AT&T network, but the device
features the 10.2/5.76Mbps HSPA technology used by both carriers.

He also said the company tomorrow
would introduce its first tablet but declined to offer further details.

The Optimus 2X, an Android-based
touchscreen smartphone, will also be the world’s first phone to capture, store
and play back video in full 1080p resolution, Ahn noted. If it becomes
available in March, it will ship with Android 2.2 OS, and if it ships later, it
will come out of the box with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), he said.

The Optimus 2X features 1GHz
NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor to speed up operations such as multitasking. It also
comes with 4-inch 400×800 capacitive touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera/camcorder,
front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video chat, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, microUSB
2.0, and microSDHC card slot supporting 32GB cards.

Also at CES, the company unveiled
another Android smartphone billed as offering the world’s brightest smartphone
display. The Optimus Black features proprietary Nova display with 700-nit
brightness for outdoor visbility in strong sunlight, yet its more power
efficient than conventional LCDs and AMOLED displays, the company contended..
The display also delivers pure white tones to make text reading easier, LG
said.

The Optimus Black GSM/HSPA is
only 0.36-inches-thick at its thickest point and tapers down to 0.24 inches at
its thinnest point, making it the world’s slimmest cellphone, the company also
claimed.

Ahn said it’s not certain yet when the phone
will be available in the U.S., but a company statement said it would be rolled
out globally in the first half with Android 2.2 but be upgradable to Android
2.3. It’s also the world’s first smartphone with Wi-Fi Direct capability for
direct transfer of phone content to other mobile devices and PCs, and it also
features the world’s first front-facing 2-magapioxel camera for videochats.

A new user interface lets users
directly access messages, emails and missed calls from the locked screen with
just one single finger tap. The gesture UI lets users lift, shake or tap the
phone to initiate various functions, such as taking pictures.
