Canon DSLRs Celebrate Decade At No. 1

Melville, N.Y. — Canon said Monday that its EOS line of interchangeable-lens digital cameras (DSLR and compact-system cameras) have held the No. 1 worldwide market share position by volume for the 10 consecutive years through 2012.

Canon, which said the accomplishment was determined in “a Canon survey,” attributed the feat to developing its own key components, including lenses, optics and the CMOS image sensors, including the new cutting-edge chips that are first used in the flagship EOS-1D series.

“By applying these technologies to other models as well, Canon has successfully created a powerful product lineup that effectively responds to the needs of a wide range of users, from professionals to entry-level users, which has enabled the company to maintain the top global share,” Canon said in a statement Monday.

The success in DSLRs began in 2003, when Canon introduced its compact EOS Digital Rebel. Since that time, Canon has launched a number of models targeting advanced amateur users in developing the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for DSLR video recording.

In 2012, Canon also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the EOS camera system.

During the year, Canon launched the compact-system EOS M, aimed at expanding the company’s entry-level user base, along with the EOS 6D, the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera equipped with a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor, which contributed to the growth of the advanced-amateur user segment.

This year, Canon introduced the EOS Rebel SL1, billed as the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera equipped with an APS-C-size sensor.
