Canon Adds 4K HDSLR

Lake Success, N.Y. -

introduced Thursday its EOS HDSLR featuring 4K (4,096 by 2,160) video resolution.

The EOS 1D C, which will be available later in the year at a $15,000 suggested retail, incorporates a full-size 18.1-megapixel CMOS sensor that outputs 8-bit 4:2:2 Motion JPEG 4K video to a CF card at 24 fps.

The camera also captures 1080p video at either 24p or 60p, at 8-bit 4:2:0, and is capable of uncompressed YCbCr 8-bit 4:2:2 output via an HDMI port.

The 4K video is captured by an APS-H-sized crop of the full-frame sensor, while 1080p video can be produced either using a standard FullHD setting that captures the full 36mm width of the CMOS sensor or using an optional Super 35 crop setting that standardizes the field of view with other cinema cameras and allows the use of all Super 35 lenses, including Canon's new EOS Cinema zoom lenses.

The camera also incorporates Canon Log Gamma that records video with rich gradation expression, equivalent  to motion-picture-grade highlight and shadow detail.

Additional features include an expanded sensitivity range of up to ISO 25,600, CF card file storage, built-in headphone jack and bundled software applications. This includes EOS Utility, which allows settings adjustments from a PC, and Picture Style Editor, which allows the camera's live output to be viewed on an external monitor and to adjust the image in real-time.

The Canon EOS-1D C can be used with more than 60 interchangeable Canon EF and EF Cinema lenses.

For still work, the camera is said to produce comparable results to the Canon EOS-1D X d-SLR camera, offering a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 51,200. It is equipped with Dual Digic 5+ image processors, and is capable of high-speed continuous shooting up to 12 fps or 14 fps in ultra-fast continuous shooting mode (mirror remains raised during shooting of JPEG images only).

In related announcements timed for this week's NAB show, Canon said it is developing two 4K digital cinematography cameras as part of its acclaimed new Cinema EOS system. Designated as the Cinema EOS C500 for use with EF-mount lenses, and the Cinema EOS C500 PL for use with PL-mount lenses, the 4K pixel cameras offer uncompressed RAW output for external recording.
