SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. — Solid-state drives (SSDs) and camcorders will drive flash memory growth through 2012, according to a new report from In-Stat.
Revenue from those two applications is expected to enjoy a compound annual growth rate of more than 100 percent through 2012 and off-set declines in other flash segments, leading to an overall category growth of 30 percent through the forecast period, In-Stat reported.
“The top four applications for NAND flash will remain MP3 players and PMPs, mobile handsets, aftermarket cards and USB flash drives, with a combined market share of over 80 percent over the next couple of years,” said analyst Jim McGregor in a statement announcing the research. “This percentage will drop to about 70 percent by 2012, as solid state drives and video capture from digital video cameras grow in importance.”
The market has seen a shift as the leaders Samsung, Toshiba and Hynix lost share to Micron and Intel, In-Stat observed. Worldwide flash revenues are expected to reach $61 billion in 2012.
