B&N Nook e-Reader Sells Out

New York
– Barnes & Noble said it sold out of its new 3G dual-screen

Nook
e-reader

for Christmas and is now taking orders for Jan. 4 and later,
according to its

Web site

.

Shortages of e-readers have already plagued other suppliers
this fall. Sony said last month its Pocket and Touch Edition e-readers have already plagued other suppliers this fall. Sony said last month its Pocket and Touch Edition e-readers were selling out as soon as shipments came in, and the company’s Web site now states Sony may not ship its much-anticipated 3G wireless e-reader, called the Daily Edition, until just after Christmas. The unit was previously slated for release in December.

A Sony spokesman explained, “We are seeing very high demand for the Daily Edition, based on the number of people who requested notification alerts when the devices went on sale…, We are working hard to ship the Daily Edition for the holidays. We were conservative on our web site, providing a shipping window of Dec. 18 to January 8. Customers will receive shipment on a first come, first served basis and we are doing everything possible to ensure they get the devices for the holidays.”

However Sony said it may not ship its much-anticipated 3G
wireless e-reader, called the Daily Edition, until just after Christmas.  The unit was
previously slated for release in December.

Foxit also reported backorders on its eSlick e-reader.

Carl Howe, Yankee Group consumer research director, said he would
not be surprised if e-reader supplies were constrained.  “This is a category that is brand new. Sales
were less than a million last year, so it’s not like any supplier is betting
the farm and making 5 million [units] for Christmas.”

The popular Amazon Kindle was out of stock during the last two
Christmas selling seasons.
