BlackBerry Gets Navigation

Reston, Va. — Nextel and TeleNav (formerly Televigation) and Research In Motion (RIM) have teamed up to offer the first turn-by-turn navigation application for the BlackBerry.

TeleNav’s Java-based GPS navigation will be available on the BlackBerry 7520 wireless handheld via Nextel’s digital wireless network. The system provides visual and audio based turn-by-turn directions including map displays and graphical driving cues. TeleNav automatically updates the map information to provide up-to-date driving instructions, it said. Nextel’s assisted-GPS technology also allows driving directions to be revised if a driver misses a turn and requires a new route.

TeleNav costs $9.99 a month for unlimited use and the charge appears on customers’ Nextel bills. New customers who sign up for TeleNav can use the service free for the first 30 days, the company said.
