Dayton, Ohio — Former Panasonic executive David Bearden has joined Rex Stores as president/COO, effective yesterday.

Bearden retired from Panasonic last March as group president of its consumer electronics sales group. Before that he was president/COO of the manufacturer’s national sales group.

At Rex, he fills a role left vacant by the retirement of Lawrence Tomchin in January 2004. Chairman/CEO Stuart Rose had served as interim president prior to Bearden’s appointment.

“David brings a broad range of management skills, experience and extensive industry knowledge to this role at Rex Stores,” Rose said.

Bearden will be involved in all facets of Rex’s retail operations, including buying, inventory management, merchandising strategy and store development, the company said, allowing Rose to devote additional time to the company’s energy sector investments.

“As a former supplier to Rex, I have been impressed with the company’s role in the markets it serves and its efficiency as an operator,” Bearden said.

The brown- and white-goods chain operates 228 stores in 37 states.
