Dallas- AT&T called its
iPhone 4S launch its most successful iPhone launch to date even though the
phone was launched simultaneously on three wireless networks for the first
time, with a fourth network to come.
Tier 2 carrier C Spire, formerly
known as U.S. Cellular, also plans to offer the device, the company’s web site
shows. The web site does not show a specific availability date.
For its part, AT&T said it
activated more than 1 million iPhone 4S smartphones between the Friday launch
and Tuesday.
, president/CEO of
and Consumer Markets,
attributed the success to the inclusion of 4G HSPA+ technology in AT&T’s
model, whereas the Sprint and Verizon versions use slower CDMA EV-DO Rev. A
technology. Consumers “want it to run on a network that lets them download
twice as fast as competitors,” de la Vega said.
In 2007, AT&T became the
first carrier in the world to launch an iPhone in 2007.
