BOSTON – Apple and Samsung overtook former smartphone leader Nokia in global unit sales of smartphones in the second quarter, with Apple taking the top spot, Strategy Analytics said.
In April, Strategy Analytics reported that Apple overtook Nokia for the first time in first-quarter dollar sales of cellular handset and tablets combined.
Strategy Analytics found Nokia’s smartphone share falling quickly from a year ago. (See table below)
“Having become the first ever vendor to ship 100 million smartphones in a single year during 2010, long-time leader Nokia has slipped two places in our rankings in Q2 2011,” said Strategy Analytics director Tom Kang. Nokia’s 15 percent global smartphone market share in the quarter is less than half of what it was just one year earlier, he said.
Only four years after the original iPhone’s launch, Apple’s share in the second quarter hit 18 percent, driven by rapid expansion in overseas markets, Strategy Analytics said. Samsung’s share came to 17 percent, with Samsung’s shipments having grown 520 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.
Strategy Analytics also found global smartphone shipments growing 76 percent in the quarter to hit a record 110 million units in the quarter.
