Apple Preparing For Smaller Screen iPad?

New York – Apple will unveil a smaller screen iPad in mid-October, Fortune said in citing a “major Apple investor” who claimed to have heard about the plan from “multiple sources.”

Invitations will go out to the press on Oct. 10, Fortune said in citing the source. Based on past precedent, the invitation date points to an Oct. 17 announcement and a Friday, Nov. 2, launch, Fortune said.

Analysts have expected Apple to launch an iPad that would be less expensive than the current iPad and would feature a screen smaller than the current model’s 9.7 inches. Some analysts have called the expected device the iPad Mini and expect a screen size of 7.85 inches.

Such an iPad would help Apple compete at the lower end of the tablet market in a niche exploited by Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google.
