CD Radio has added Alpine to its list of manufacturers committed to building car radios that receive its planned satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) service, which is expected to launch commercially at the end of the fourth quarter of 2000.
Alpine will build AM/FM/satellite receivers for automakers and the aftermarket, CD Radio said. Alpine's automaker accounts are Ford, Honda, Acura, and BMW. Alpine is also committed to making receivers for XM Satellite Radio's competing service.
Other manufacturers committed to build CD Radio car receivers are Recoton (whose car audio brands include Jensen) and General Motors' Delphi Delco unit, although GM has committed to offering XM radios during model year 2002.
Ford has agreed to market CD Radio receivers on an exclusive basis through March 2002 starting as early as the first quarter of 2001. -- Joseph Palenchar
