Who’s Dopey Now Verizon? Netflix Admits To Throttling Data Streams

Last week Verizon called T-Mobile CEO John Legere “dopey” for suggesting that the No. 1 carrier downgrades Netflix streams to 360p in an effort to conserve bandwidth. Well, while maybe Verizon isn’t the culprit, it may be complicit.

According to Netflix, it’s been capping its streams for most carriers at 600 kps for more than five years, “to protect consumers from exceeding mobile data caps” and paying overage charges. Two carriers it doesn’t throttle are T-Mobile and Sprint, because ““historically those two companies have had more consumer-friendly policies.”

Especially the former, whose Binge On option allows consumers unlimited data with participating content providers that’s capped at a higher 1.5Mbps and 480p streaming quality.

“Last week when T-Mobile announced the addition of YouTube and other services to Binge On, John Legere addressed criticisms of Binge On and its 480p streaming quality, saying that AT&T and Verizon was streaming Netflix at 360p. AT&T and Verizon denied Legere’s statement, but it turns out that AT&T and VZW’s customers are indeed getting their Netflix content throttled, just not by their carriers.”
