A strong Black Friday, an extra Saturday before Christmas and rising consumer confidence led to the best holiday for retailers in six years.

A strong Black Friday, an extra Saturday before Christmas and rising consumer confidence combined to send retail sales up 4.9 percent from Nov. 1-Dec. 24, their best holiday showing in six years. But according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, the real winners were online merchants, whose revenues increased 18.1 percent during the yuletide period.
