Leap Wireless Reports 42% Customer Loss

San Diego — Leap Wireless International reported declining revenue for the second quarter of 2013, ended June 30.

Leap was acquired by AT&T last month.

Total revenues for the second quarter of 2013 decreased 7 percent to $731.5 million when compared with the prior-year period. Service revenues decreased 9.7 percent: $731.5 million in the second quarter vs. the prior-year’s $786.8 million.

Leap Wireless reported $148.8 million of adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA) for the second quarter of 2013, compared with $190.8 million for the prior-year quarter.

Second-quarter operating loss was $7.6 million, compared with operating income of $31.6 million for the second quarter of 2012.

Leap Wireless said it had 283,066 customers at the end of the quarter, down 42.6 percent from the prior-year count of 492,720.

Core wireless churn for the second quarter of 2013 was 3.6 percent, which refers to Leap’s traditional, monthly voice service (Cricket Wireless) and excludes customers for Cricket Broadband and Cricket PayGo, it said.
