CEA: Consumers Like Mobile Video, Choice

Arlington, Va. — Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last week in response to its 16th Annual Notice of Inquiry seeking data on the status of the market for video competition, saying consumers like mobile video and choice.

Julie Kearney, regulatory affairs VP of CEA, said the organization “appreciates the FCC’s insightful questions about the status of the video market. Twenty years ago, consumers could record and review live programming only through devices attached to their televisions. But increased mobility and greater access to video content mean we’re now able to use our mobile devices to watch what we want, when we want, no matter where we are.”

Kearney noted, “Even at home, consumers are supplementing their traditional TV viewing with products that provide more viewing flexibility. For example, CEA estimates unit sales to dealers of network-enabled digital media players rose by 35 percent — while prices declined by 12 percent — from 2012 to 2013.”

She added, “Our comments … clearly demonstrate that the market for mobile video consumption continues to grow at a rapid pace. We look forward to working with the FCC as it continues to encourage technology-neutral, platform-agnostic solutions that provide consumers with diverse and innovative viewing experiences.”
