Working On Holidays Is Normal

I am going to be a hypocrite.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year, and it deeply bothers me that most of the noise surrounding this day has to do with when stores are opening. Personally, I would rather see every store close and then open at a reasonable hour the next day.

With that said, all the yelling and screaming that takes place whenever a store announces its Black Friday schedule is foolish.

There are certain jobs that simply require people work during holidays. Sure, there are the important jobs like police officers and firefighters, but how about all the supermarkets, hospitals, movie theaters, gas stations and convenience stores, just to name a few?

Anyone who has one of these jobs should expect to work holidays. That is part of the deal. So bemoaning the fact that sales associates at Sears, Best Buy, Target or Walmart have to work through a holiday makes no sense to me.
