With the virtual content locker system known as UltraViolet scheduled to pop up in various companies’ announcements throughout this week’s International CES, discount store chain Walmart got the jump on the crowd by revealing that its Vudu movie streaming service is expanding its UltraViolet- enabled Disc-to-Digital activations from at home.

Walmart also said it will be launching a new Facebook app that will give people access to exclusive movie content.

Starting this month, Vudu will allow users to convert previously purchased DVD/Blu-ray movies to UltraViolet digital copies right at home. Previously, a trip to a local Walmart store was required for the task.

UltraViolet is a free, cloud-based digital library that gives users greater flexibility in playing the content they’ve purchased in one format  on multiple device platforms.

Customers can go to http://www.VUDU.com and download the VUDU To Go App for Macs and PCs; search for previously-purchased movies from participating studio partners; select how you would like the movies converted and convert them from a standard DVD or Blu-ray movie to a standard digital file for $2; or upgrade a standard DVD to an HD digital copy for $5.

Walmart said the Vudu To Go App will authorize the digital UltraViolet copies and place them in a user’s Vudu account without the need to upload anything.

Walmart also recently enhanced Vudu to make it accessible from a growing list of select Android tablets as well as iOS devices.

Regarding Facebook, the Walmart Entertainment Facebook App will enable Walmart’s more than 26 million Facebook fans to read and submit kid friendly movie reviews, watch exclusive film content and vote on what movies the retailer will.
