Sorry Rubio. Amazon Isn’t The Largest Retailer In The World

In last night’s GOP Debate on Fox, U.S. State Senator and Republican candidate Marco Rubio said Amazon is the country’s and the world’s largest retailer. According to the National Retail Federation, that title for both regions rightfully goes to Wal-Mart Stores. Amazon is actually No. 15.

If you drill down into just U.S. consumer electronics retailers,  Amazon fares a bit better by coming in at No. 3 on the 2015 TWICE Top 100 CE Retailers Report. Unfortunately (for both Amazon and Rubio), it again falls short to No. 2 Walmart.

However, if you drill down even further and just take CE e-tailers into account, then, yes, Amazon is No. 1. But as we note in our 2015 Top 25 CE E-tailers Report, that stronghold may be lessening. (Did anyone say Alibaba?) Despite these errors, Rubio is certainly accurate when he notes our economy is radically changing and Amazon has been disruptive to many.
