Vudu Unveils Custom STB

Video-download service Vudu unveiled last month a high-end networkable set-top box targeted at the professional home-theater-installation channel.

New to the Vudu XL2 is a design style that occupies just one rack unit of space, the company said.

The unit, which is currently available at a $1,299 suggested retail, incorporates 1TB of hard-disk capacity capable of storing more than 400 films and will access the company’s instant-start HD and HDX (1080p) high-def movie download options.

Vudu said the XL2 was “designed to deliver an optimized cinematic experience to owners of 40-inch and larger HDTVs and projectors.”

It is equipped with IP and IR control to allow integration into most high-end home control systems, and allows 1080i output over component-video connections and the ability to route and switch HD signals through the home with the use of off-the-shelf video switchers, the company said.

The exterior of the XL2 features an aerospace-grade aluminum bezel sporting a glowing Vudu logo.

“The introduction of the XL2 reflects our unwavering commitment to the custom installation market,” stated Tony Miranz, Vudu business development and sales executive VP. “Vudu XL2 is designed for easy and secure integration into rack-mounted systems and delivers the world’s largest HD library as well as the highest quality on-demand 1080p HD, making Vudu XL2 an installer’s weapon of choice.”
