Panasonic Reveals 50-Inch 3-D Plasma Display

Osaka, Japan – Panasonic said here Monday that it plans
to show a 50-inch version of a 1080p 3-D plasma display at the upcoming CEATEC
Show in Chiba, Japan, beginning Oct. 6.

Previously the
company has shown the 3-D effect on prototype 103-inch versions of the 3-D
display. The company believes that 50 inches will be one of the most popular
screen sizes for 3-D displays, when they begin to ship into the market next
year.

The stereoscopic technology
uses two separate (left-eye, right-eye) 1080p images at slightly different
angles to produce the 3-D effect. The two fields alternate rapidly to create
the illusion of one 3-D image. It works when viewers wear special active
shutter glasses that block one eye and then the other, in sequence, with the
images on the screen, the company said.

Panasonic plans to
market a 3-D-capable Blu-ray Disc player to supply source signals to displays.
No pricing has yet been announced for the 3-D displays or Blu-ray player.

Panasonic is
working with the Blu-ray Disc Association and other industry leaders on setting
a standard for FullHD 3-D in the home.
