LG Bows Second Super Blu Player

DENVER — LG Electronics is unveiling here this week its second-generation Super Blu combination Blu-ray Disc/HD DVD player, which for the first time will support interactive capabilities of both formats.

The new player, model BH200, which ships in the fourth quarter at a $999 suggested retail, will eventually replace the company’s first-generation model.

The player supports both Blu-ray discs and HD DVDs, in addition to DVDs and audio CDs. The audio CD format was not supported in the first-generation player.

The player will output a variety of standard-definition and high-definition picture formats up to and including Full HD 1080p output at the Output connections include HDMI v1.3 and the player will support Deep Color technology that improves color tones and achieves finer color gradations.

In addition, the player will up-convert standard-definition DVD video to the 1080p format over the HDMI connection to match the full resolution of the TV screen.

Also added is LG Simplink multi-device control based on the HDMI-CEC standard. The system allows for convenient control of other LG Simplink products using the existing HDMI connection.

The player will also support all mandated Advanced audio formats which it will output in bitstream form over the HDMI connector to be decoded by compatible A/V receivers.

The technology accesses superior lossless audio soundtracks, available on many Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD movie titles, with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound when connected to compatible audio equipment.

Support audio formats include: Dolby Digital Plus / Dolby True HD, DTS HD High Resolution / Master Audio.

The player also supports USB Media Host and provides easy access to digital music and photo libraries via the USB port.

Currently, the player will support the new HDi networked interactivity that will enable access interactive HD DVD bonus content over a network internet connection.

Similar capability for Blu-ray Disc, called BD Live, is not yet supported.

However, the player will access rich menus and extra features available from many Blu-ray discs and HD DVDs through the supported BD-Java / Final Standard Profile (“Picture in Picture”), and HDi interactivity/network connection.

The player will also include QDEO Advanced Video Processing technology from partner Marvel. The system is said to provide “superior up-scaling accuracy, noise reduction and color precision.”

Also to be shown is the company’s recently announced flagship LBX LCD TV series, dubbed “Opus.” Models feature 1080p HD resolution and 120Hz frame-rate technology.

The LCD TV line includes a new styling design that uses more rounded edges and corners; a gloss piano-black bezel; and a re-engineered pedestal base.

The LBX line will be available this month in the 42-inch ($2,499 suggested retail), 47-inch ($3,299) and 52- inch ($4,499) screen sizes, and will receive selective distribution through assisted sales channels.

Other features include HDMI v1.2 inputs, LG’s TruColor wide color gamut technology, a Super IPS wide viewing angle panel, and the company’s “XD Engine” technology.

LG is also showing a new 1080p 50-inch plasma set — model 50PY3D — that incorporates “LG Simple Link” connectivity, allowing integrated system control of other LG Simple Link compatible equipment, such as DVD players or home theater systems.

The set, which ships this month at a $3,499 suggested retail, includes three HDMI v1.2 inputs and a USB Media Host interface to allow for playback of digital music and photos.
