Epson Brings 3D Projectors To CEDIA Expo

INDIANAPOLIS —

Epson used the recent CEDIA
Expo to unveil a range of new PowerLite Home Cinema
projectors for the custom-installation market featuring
3D capability for the first time in a 3LCD system.

The company showed three model series including the
3010/3010e, the 5010/5010e and the top-end home cinema
6010.

The 3010 and 3010e models offer 2D/3D FullHD
1080p performance using the latest 3LCD imaging
technology.

Both projectors list contrast ratios of up to 40,000:1,
brightness of up to 2,200 lumens, include built-in stereo
speakers and support Internet connectivity systems.

The Home Cinema 3010 ($1,599 suggested retail) offers
wired connectivity support, while the 3010e ($1,799)
includes wireless support.

Epson said it is targeting the projectors at value-conscious
home A/V enthusiasts and videophiles looking to
add or upgrade to 3D solutions.

All of the projectors use active-shutter 240Hz 3D
glasses technology and incorporate Epson’s Virtual
480Hz drive technology to achieve brightness levels of
up to 2,200 lumens for color and white light.

Two pairs of 3D glasses are included with the Home
Cinema 3010. Third-party active-shutter glasses are also
supported by the projectors, Epson said.

When viewing in ambient light conditions, the projectors
will yield up to a 40,000:1 contrast ratio.

Sound is supported with two built-in 10-watt speakers.

Epson also showed the Home Cinema 5010/5010e.

The 5010 and 5010e are billed as a higher-performance
model, featuring a 200,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,400
lumens of brightness. The 5010 will be sold through online
resellers, targeting home-theater enthusiasts with the
know how to do their own installations and setup.

The 5010e offers wireless capability. Both are slated
for November deliveries at suggested retails of $3,000
and $3,500, respectively

Advancing on the 5010 platform is the new 3D/2D flagship
projector – the PowerLite Pro Cinema 6010. The
projector features 1080p native resolution, a 200,000:1
native contrast ratio and up to 2,400 lumens of brightness,
which improves upon last year’s flagship by 800 lumens.

“3D is more relevant in front projection than any other
display format,” Jason Palmer, Epson home entertainment
marketing and channel manager, told TWICE. “But
the problem with 3D in front projection is that you need
brightness for the best presentation. A lot of 3D projectors
are in the 1,100 or 1,200 lumen area. The Pro Cinema
6010 offers 2,400 lumens brightness, and that’s up
from 1,600 lumens in our flagship model from last year.

“Our Bright 3D Drive technology, which is a 480Hz
direct drive, actually shrinks the amount of cross talk, and
decreases the amount of light loss. So you end up with a
really bright 2D image, which is enhanced from last year,
and a 3D image that is truly watchable. So we have chosen
to target brightness as a major issue in 3D, and I
think that is going to be a difference maker for us.”

Based on 3LCD imaging technology, the Pro Cinema
6010 (under $4,000 suggested retail) includes 480Hz
drive technology for enhanced light output in 3D mode,
cinema filter for improved color fidelity, THX certification
for accurate picture quality and a new Spilt Screen mode
for watching two sources at once.

An extra lamp is included along with a ceiling mount
and a cable cover for installation flexibility.

Epson said it is targeting the Pro Cinema 6010 at
“A/V technology elitists” looking for top-of-the-line 3D
and 2D image quality and features, and will distribute it
through the custom installer channel.

The 3D performance is based on 240Hz active-shutter
3D glasses technology using the aforementioned
Virtual 480Hz drive system.

Resolution is enhanced using Espon’s Super Resolution
and FineFrame technologies, which are said to
yield smoother frame interpolation and sharper video
quality (2D Mode).

The projector features two anamorphic lens modes
(stretch and squeeze) to enable 2.35:1 anamorphic
viewing without an external processor, 2D-to-3D conversion,
and a Cinema filter feature that presents a large
color space for improved color fidelity.

The 6010 uses a Fujinon OptiCinema lens (2.1 zoom
ratio), which supports improved color and detail, and includes
two pairs of active-shutter 3D. It will also support
third party glasses, Epson said.
