DVD Manufacturers Offering Free Disc Incentives

Philips and Toshiba are looking to spark sales of their respective DVD players by offering special DVD disc giveaways with select new players this fall.

Philips said it has an arrangement with Hollywood’s DreamWorks studio to offer a DVD copy of the summer’s blockbuster animated feature “Shrek” free with the purchase of select Philips DVD players between Nov. 23, 2001-Feb. 2, 2002.

The “Shrek” double-disc DVD is packed with 11-plus hours of features including an all-new, extended ending created for the VHS and DVD releases.

In the program, retailers will provide purchasers of select Philips DVD players and other products a mail-in coupon valid for the “Shrek” DVD.

Meanwhile, Toshiba said it has partnered with educational video producer Cerebellum Corp. on a DVD promotion giving purchasers of Toshiba-branded DVD players a coupon for free and discounted titles from the producers’ “Standard Deviants” line of educational DVDs. The offering covers subjects encompassing algebra, astronomy, foreign languages, Shakespeare and HTML, among a few.

The in-box coupon offer will be available from November 2001-November 2002. Customers may choose to use the coupon for one free “Standard Deviants” DVD ($20 value plus $7.95 shipping and handling), three DVD’s (for $19.95 plus $9.95 shipping), or five DVDs (for $34.99 plus $9.95 shipping).
