DisplaySearch Eyes 1M 3D Set Sales In 2010

DisplaySearch gave TV makers reason to be optimistic about the forthcoming launch of their new 3D TV lines in 2010.

The market research firm released findings of a worldwide advanced TV study that predicts 3D TV sales will exceed 1 million units this year.

In the Quarterly TV Design and Features Report, DisplaySearch estimated sets using 3D technology shipped around 200,000 units in 2009, and it is forecasting that to see a bump up to 1.2 million units in 2010.

DisplaySearch said the category will then begin a steady climb to 64 million 3D TV units in 2018.

“We have passed the first hurdle,” stated Paul Gray, DisplaySearch TV electronics research director. “The critical Blu-ray 3D specification is written, but now comes the hard work of securing interoperability. Consumers will want reassurance that such things as 3D glasses will interoperate between brands. Retailers will also have the same demand to allow a thriving accessory market to develop. The next stage is less glamorous but vital to secure 3D’s long-term value.”

In other advanced TV findings, DisplaySearch said that 70 million connected TVs will ship in 2012, a number that was just 15 million last year.
