Samsung Marks 1 Millionth TV App Download

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA —

Samsung recently reported
reaching several key milestones related to the
global acceptance of its connected TV products.

The company said it recently passed the millionth
TV app download globally from the Samsung Apps
Smart TV Library.

The company’s 200th TV application is now live
via the platform. Samsung said the milestones were
achieved in less than a year after the initial launch of
Samsung Apps.

The top-ranking TV maker said some of the most frequently
downloaded apps to date have included movies,
sports and gaming categories, including Hulu Plus,
ESPN Next Level, CinemaNow and Texas Holdem.

Samsung said it has 66 percent marketshare of the
U.S. connected TV market, according to The NPD
Group figures, and Samsung Apps are available on
more than 50 percent of its 2010 TV lineup.

Samsung said it is also the global market leader in
LED TV, LCD TV and plasma TV sales, according to
NPD findings.

In the U.S. alone, Samsung expects the Smart TV
market to reach 6.5 million units by the end of 2010
and anticipates demand will grow to 20 million by
2012.

“The evolution of television in recent years has been
astounding as consumers seek technology that enhances
their viewing experience, and their lives,” said
Boo-keun Yoon, Samsung visual display business
president. “Integrating the traditional TV experience
with applications and features like 3D bridges the gap
between simply consuming programming and interacting
with it. We are seeing that consumers are embracing
these new experiences with their TVs.”

Going forward, Samsung said it is working closely
with the developer community to bring new applications
to the Samsung Apps library. Earlier this year,
Samsung held several “Free the TV Developer Days”
around the world, which brought together the developer
community with notable leaders across the
connected TV ecosystem to plot continued development
plans.

At International CES, the company plans to present
finalists for its recent “U.S. Free the TV Challenge,” who
will showcase some of their applications at the show.
