EchoStar Slings New Products At Dish, TV Services

Dish Network announced at International CES it will use the “TV Everywhere” moniker on a suite of products based on Slingbox technology from the Sling Media division of its EchoStar hardware development unit.

The new products and services will allow subscribers to access live TV and DVR recordings over the Internet and on in-home wireless networks. At the same time the satellite-TV service’s EchoStar sibling unit unveiled several similar products for other multichannel TV service providers.

Sling products for Dish Network showcased at the show included the previously shown ViP 922 “SlingLoaded” set-top, which is now expected in the second quarter of 2010.

Dish also plans to deliver a TV Everywhere Adapter, which adds Slingbox capability to existing Dish HD DVRs such as the ViP 722k via a USB cable; and the Wi-Fi HD Monitor, which is a portable, 720p HD monitor that can receive an HD video signal from a Sling-enabled set-top box over a Wi-Fi network.

Dish introduced a Remote Access app, which enables a handheld iPhone or iPod Touch device to be used as a remote control for most of Dish Network’s standard- and high-definition DVR receivers.

The app will also set and delete timers on multiple receivers, browse and search up to nine days of shows, and manage a DVR library by setting recording priorities.

Meanwhile, EchoStar’s Sling Media unit announced four products for TV service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers.

The Slingbox 700U will add Slingbox capabilities to an existing Internet-connected set-top-box with a USB port. This will join other EchoStar set-top devices with integrated Slingbox capabilities, including the ViP 922.

The Sling Monitor 150 is a stand-alone HD monitor with a 15.6-inch 720p display with stereo speakers and a built-in folding stand for countertop or wall-mounted use.

Also included in the monitor is integrated dual-band 802.11n networking.

The Sling Receiver 300 will be a companion to a SlingLoaded set-top box and can send HD video streams to any other television in the home over an existing wireless home network.

The Sling Touch Control 100 is a touchscreen remote control with an interface based on Sling Media’s SlingGuide. It will control Sling-enabled DVRs and other A/V equipment.

EchoStar’s Sling Media unit also announced an alliance with Adobe that will allow support for the Adobe Flash Platform on the Sling Media products.

The Adobe Flash Player and Flash streaming protocols will be included in the Slingbox Pro-HD and Slingbox Solo devices to deliver smooth H.264 video and audio, the companies announced.

Internet-connected devices that include Adobe Flash Player 10 or are Adobe Flash-enabled will be able to run the SlingPlayer application. Devices include media players, PCs, gaming consoles and mobile devices.

SlingPlayer devices will use Adobe Flash Player to accelerate the decoding of a video stream, for a high-quality experience using less battery power.

At its booth, Dish Network also gave showgoers a side-by-side comparison of Dish Network programming and services compared with rival DirecTV’s, in its effort to demonstrate what the company claims is a better customer value.
