HDR Coming To Amazon Prime Video

Seattle – Amazon will bring High Dynamic Range (HDR) video to its Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming service sometime in 2015, the company announced.

“Amazon is working with Hollywood studios, leading technology innovators and global consumer electronics companies to bring Prime members and customers an unmatched HDR experience in 2015,” the company said in a statement.

Amazon Originals will be the first to arrive in HDR quality at an unspecified time later this year.

HDR will deliver greater contrast “with detailed shadows and distinct highlights to make colors appear richer, brighter and more lifelike,” the company said.

“We’re excited that Prime members will soon be able to view movies and TV shows, including Amazon Originals, in HDR quality,” said Michael Paull, Amazon VP of digital video. “HDR is the natural next step in our commitment to premium entertainment,” he said, pointing to the Amazon launch six months ago of movies and TV shows in 4K Ultra HD.

The HDR content will presumably stream to Amazon’s video-streaming app on smart TVs that will support the same unspecified HDR format that Amazon will support.
