CEA Applauds Scheduled Senate Markup of UN Disabilities Treaty

ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The following statement can be attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, regarding the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s July 22 markup of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities:

“CEA is delighted that Chairman Menendez (D-NJ), Ranking Member Corker (R-Tenn.) and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee are planning a markup of the Disabilities Treaty. In December 2012, the Senate narrowly missed an opportunity to join nearly 150 other countries that have ratified the treaty, but this markup provides a rare second chance to do the right thing.

“The Disabilities Treaty will help the consumer electronics industry improve and expand access to the innovative solutions, services and products it provides to people living with disabilities. By giving them the tools they need to succeed, the treaty promotes inclusion, economic self-reliance and educational opportunities for the millions of citizens who would not otherwise have these opportunities.

“Ratification of the treaty will ensure the U.S. maintains the highest standard of disability rights and send a clear message that – in addition to the protections afforded by the Americans with Disabilities Act – we believe everyone should have the opportunity to lead a fulfilling and productive life. Additionally, the convention will encourage greater demand for our private sector’s skills and services, as other nations begin to embrace the new international standards.

“CEA remains committed to supporting efforts that spur innovative and industry-driven products and services for all those with accessibility needs. We commend the Senate for its leadership, and urge members to ratify the Disabilities Treaty without delay.”
