WASHINGTON – Factory shipments of major appliances rose 7 percent in unit volume in October as retailers stocked up for the busy Black Friday period.
According to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), which compiles monthly wholesale data on imported and domestically produced products, vendors shipped some 4.6 million majaps to retailers in October, bringing the year-to-date total to 53.5 million pieces, up 4.1 percent from 2012.

BLOOMINGTON, ILL. — Verizon Wireless opened its first Verizon Destination Store last month and plans to open more of the interactive, lifestyle-based showrooms over the next few years in iconic, high-traffic locations across the country, the carrier said.
The first Destination Store, which covers 9,715 square feet, opened here at the Mall of America on Nov. 20. Plans call for additional locations next year in Chicago and Houston.

According to the research firm, Beats Electronics captured 23 percent of global revenue. Taking 45 percent of global shipments were five brands that Rasika Iyer, Futuresource research analyst, called “traditional headphones brands”: Philips, Sony, JVC, Sennheiser and Skullcandy.
NEW YORK — John Shalam, chairman and founder of Voxx International, celebrated his 80th birthday at a gala party at the Edison Ballroom on West 47th and Broadway with friends, family, fellow Voxx executives and industry friends. The party, arranged by his wife, Jane, featured an entertaining floor show of singers and dancers who performed hits from the 1920s to the present. Shalam shared his birthday since, in lieu of presents, guests were requested to make donations to the American Cancer Society.
Jay Vandenbree, senior VP of LG Electronics USA, will retire on Jan. 4. Vandenbree, who has been with LG Electronics USA for the past four years after 23 years with Sony Electronics, will officially retire as of Jan. 4 but stay on an advisory capacity through the first quarter of 2014, according to LG. A replacement will be announced during December, LG said ... Mike Duke, Walmart Stores president/CEO, will be succeeded in February by international division chief Doug McMillon.
