New York — The maker of BlackBerry smartphones pinned its survival on today’s global launch of its first two BlackBerry 10 OS smartphones.

However, the company faces major headwinds in its make-or-break effort to survive even though the company narrowed the quality gap with competing smartphones, analysts said.

New York — Amid its introduction of several new products today, Research In Motion officially changed its name to BlackBerry.

The name change is part of the company’s attempt to reinvent itself and present a unified marketing front, said CEO Thorsten Heins.

Waterloo, Ontario – RIM will integrate ooVoo’s HD videochat app into the BlackBerry 10 devices that RIM is launching, the companies announced.

The ooVoo app, due on the BlackBerry World storefront later this year, will integrate into the basic calling functionality in BlackBerry 10 devices, making it possible to shift from a standard voice call to an ooVoo video call, the companies said. Video chats are free.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Research In Motion are dropping all of their patent disputes against each other following a settlement resulting from arbitration proceedings.

Under the settlement, Nokia entered into a new patent license agreement with RIM in which RIM is making a one-time payment and on-going payments to Nokia. Additional details were not revealed.

Waterloo, Ontario – Research In Motion will launch its BlackBerry 10 OS and first two BlackBerry 10 smartphones on Jan. 30, the company announced.

  Details of the long-awaited smartphones and their availability will be announced at simultaneous events around the work that day.

BlackBerry 10 smartphones have entered more than 50 carrier labs for network-compatibility testing, and more carriers are expected to begin testing in the coming weeks, the company added.
