El Segundo, Calif. – DirecTV and Dish Network said Monday that they are teaming up to offer an addressable advertising platform “of unprecedented scale and reach” for political campaigns.
The companies said the strategic relationship will allow participating statewide political campaigns to target their TV ads at the household level within more than 20 million DirecTV and Dish homes.

Burlington, Mass. — Nuance Communications revealed Monday that its voice-recognition technology is being used in a new DirecTV Voice Search feature for a DirecTV app, which is currently in beta and available from Google Play and the App Store.
Nuance’s Dragon TV voice technology enables consumers to use spoken commands to easily search for program information and content with their Android or iOS phones.
By integrating Nuance’s voice capabilities into the DirecTV app, consumers can speak a search command into their phone, Nuance said in a statement.
Ann Arbor, Mich. — Verizon led all TV providers for overall customer satisfaction in the most recent annual American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).
It was the fourth year in a row that Verizon had achieved the feat. DirecTV, which finished second overall, said it also took top spots in seven categories covered in the study.
The ACSI is a national economic indicator of customer evaluations of the quality of products and services available to household consumers in the United States.
El Segundo, Calif. – DirecTV Tuesday reported a 5.6 percent decline in first-quarter profits but still managed to tally subscriber gains in Latin America and the United States.
The company reported earnings of $690 million, last quarter, compared with a $721 million profit from the year-ago period.
But on an adjusted basis, earnings rose to $826 million. Revenue rose 8 percent to $7.58 billion.
DirecTV reported a $166 million charge tied to the devaluation of Venezuelan currency earlier this year.
El Segundo, Calif. – DirecTV said Tuesday that both its iOS and Android phone and eventually tablet applications will be receiving voice search capability this summer.
The company said the app will conduct program searches by person, title, channel show time or genre, using spoken commands. Users can also change channels and make menu settings.
DirecTV’s latest whole-home DVR system called the Genie has been available and widely advertised for a few months now, but in light of the extensive publicity that rival Dish Network has received for its controversial ad-skipping Hopper system, it seemed a good time to see exactly how the 800-pound satellite gorilla was handling the hardware challenge.
I can report that after several months of use, the Genie has proven to be a compelling whole-home contender if you don’t mind skipping over commercials the old-fashioned way.
New York – Satellite TV providers DirecTV and Dish Network both reported continued tougher times adding new scribers in their respective third quarters, Tuesday.
DirecTV, the nation’s largest satellite TV service, reported adding 67,000 subscribers in its fiscal third quarter, down significantly from the 327,000 subs it added at the same time last year.
