Las Vegas — Chinese cellphone supplier Huawei added its name to the growing list of suppliers offerings smartphones based on the Windows Smartphone 8 OS.
The Ascend W1 will be available in China and Russia this month, followed by the U.S., Eastern Europe, Middle East and other countries at unspecified times.
Las Vegas – Pioneer’s car audio division outlined a speedy timetable for bringing head-unit control of core iPhone 5 audio/video functions to multiple in-dash head units.

Las Vegas — Scosche is introducing a host of new products at International CES this week, including a new line of climate-control installation kits.
The kits have 4.2-inch color touchscreen AC controllers that can be used with single or dual climate controls by plugging directly into the factory AC harness. Features include eight hard keys, the ability to accommodate ISO single- or double-DIN mounts, and factory-matched color.

LAS VEGAS — The Digital Entertainment Group, a CE and Hollywood studios-backed home video promotions group, revealed during this week’s International CES that after seven straight years of declines, U.S. home video revenue showed growth from the prior year.
The group cited market research showing a 0.23 percent increase, to $18 billion in the year, following multiple years of shrinking revenue brought on by the declining growth of the aging DVD format. In fact, annual home video revenue dropped $4 billion between 2004 and 2011.
Opening day of the 2013 International CES may have been Tuesday, but for those of us in the media it was 24 hours earlier on “Media Day,” where members of the press, bloggers and other assorted analysts of various stripes get a preview of what attendees get to see on Day One in person … or live via a variety of media that CE technology provides to society.
LAS VEGAS – It all begins with an idea, and possibly just seeing what others don’t. This was the common theme at Tuesday’s Next Generation of Innovators keynote at the 2013 International CES.
“Innovation is the hallmark of our industry,” said Michael Petricone, senior vice president of government affairs for the Consumer Electronics Association. “It defines everything we do.
“At CES we are at the absolute epicenter of innovation,” he added. “CES is a magnet for the best and the brightest.”
LAS VEGAS — Panasonic CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga used his 2013 International CES keynote address here Tuesday to shine the spotlight on the company’s expanding innovation roles in the worlds of eco-engineering, B to B sales, white goods, avionics, and connected home and automotive electronics, much of which is anchored to its expertise in display technology.
LAS VEGAS — Gary Shapiro, president/CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) gave a rousing speech to a packed ballroom, championing innovation as the cure for many of America’s ills.
Shapiro said, “Innovation is our best hope for growth, jobs and advancement of the human condition. As we debate how government should tax and spend, we can agree that encouraging innovation is a strategy that helps economic growth which reduces budget deficits and is good for nations and people.”
