Boston — Microsoft will officially roll out Windows Blue, the first major update to Windows 8, with a preview on June 26.
Dubbed Windows 8.1, the actual update will be free to Windows 8 and RT owners and will be available via the Microsoft Store sometime later this year.
The news was released by Tami Reller, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer and chief financial officer of the Windows division, at the JP Morgan Technology, Media & Telecom Conference being held here.
Reller did not offer any details on what the update will contain.
Boston — Strategy Analytics reported that 40.6 million tablets shipped during the first quarter, and Apple continued to lead the market.
The research firm said the number of tablets shipped rose 117 percent from the 18.7 million shipped during the same period in 2012.
Apple was responsible for 19.5 million of the units, for a 48 percent share of the market. Despite still controlling almost half the market, Apple saw its share fall dramatically from the 63.1 percent it controlled in 2012.
Santa Clara, Calif. — The mature notebook PC category is expected to get a boost from the popularity of Microsoft Windows 8 and the touchscreen capabilities it offers, according to a new NPD DisplaySearch report.
The penetration of touchscreens in notebook PCs was less than 3 percent in 2012, but is expected to grow to more than 12 percent in 2013. This compares with touchscreen penetration of 77 percent in mobile phones and 100 percent in tablet PCs.
New York — Worldwide PC shipments in the first quarter of the year posted the steepest decline ever recorded by the research firm International Data Corp. (IDC).
IDC analysts directly blamed the situation on Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system.
"At this point, unfortunately, it seems clear that the Windows 8 launch not only failed to provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market," said Bob O'Donnell, IDC program VP, clients and displays.
Las Vegas — Chinese cellphone supplier Huawei added its name to the growing list of suppliers offerings smartphones based on the Windows Smartphone 8 OS.
The Ascend W1 will be available in China and Russia this month, followed by the U.S., Eastern Europe, Middle East and other countries at unspecified times.
Las Vegas – Sprint will join its largest rivals in offering Windows Phone 8 smartphones, launching one HTC model and one Samsung model in the summer, the carrier announced at International CES.
The phones will feature 4G LTE and will be available for use with the carrier’s unlimited-data plans.
Both Windows phones will feature dual cameras,dual-core processors, and expandable memory. Additional details were not released.
LAS VEGAS – Lenovo is introducing an entirely new class of computer called the Table PC and entering the gaming PC category at CES this year.
The company also rolled out new all-in-one PCs, a gaming desktop and new Ultrabooks.
Dubbed the IdeaCentre Horizon, the device is a computer centered on 27-inch 720p HD display that sits flat on a table and is meant to be used by families and groups, said Nick Reynolds, Lenovo’s director of worldwide consumer marketing. The Horizon is part of Lenovo’s “multi-user, multi-mode, multitouch” initiative.
For the last few weeks I thought Hurricane Sandy had managed to knock Microsoft’s Redmond campus off the power grid.
The almost total lack of noise from the software giant regarding Windows 8 sales in both the aftermarket and PC OEM arena is quite telling, and the only reason I could come up with was its email system was down due to the high winds that crushed New Jersey and New York. The hush surrounding the Surface tablet is just as damning.
San Francisco — Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled rollout plans for the Windows Phone 8 OS, with phones coming available this weekend in Europe and by U.S. carriers starting in November.
Of the four national carriers, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon will offer Windows Phone 8 phones beginning in November, Ballmer said. Sales through Sprint, which has just begun to roll out 4G LTE service in a handful of markets, weren’t announced.
