Santa Clara, Calif. — Intel’s board of directors today named company veteran Brian Kryzanich as its next CEO.
Kryzanich, 52, will replace Paul Otellini when he officially steps down from the position on May 16 during the company’s stockholder meeting. Otellini announced last November his intention to leave. He will have spent 38 years with Intel.
Kryzanich joined Intel in 1982.

Rockville, Md. — Hillcrest Labs’ Freespace in-air pointing and motion-control technology is being used for Intel’s new reference design kit for IPTV set-top boxes and media servers, the companies said Tuesday.
Hillcrest’s Freespace Motion Engine software embedded in the Intel Media Server Reference Design (MSRD) kit will enable TV operators to offer mouse-like point-and-click navigation control of TV programming.
Santa Clara, Calif. — Intel today unveiled a small-form-factor solid-state drive.
The Intel SSD 525 series is intended for OEMs building Ultrabooks, all-in-one PCs and ultra-thin notebooks.
The drive is 3.7mm by 50.8mm by 29.85mm and weighs 0.35 ounces, or about one-eighth the size of a traditional 2.5-inch hard disk drive. Data-transfer rates are in the 6GBps performance.
The 525 will be available in 30GB, 60GB, 90GB, 120GB, 180GB and 240GB capacities. The 120GB and 180GB variants are already shipping, with the rest expected to follow this quarter.
Santa Clara, Calif. — Intel will begin to phase out production of its branded desktop motherboards, effective after the introduction of its next-generation Haswell processor by 2013.
The company announced the decision in an email to the press.
The move is expected to take place over the next three years as Intel focuses on the Ultrabook, smartphone and tablet side of the computing business, the company said. The company said it will continue to support its long line of branded processors and motherboards.
The laptop took another step closer to irrelevancy this week with Qualcomm’s introduction of its 800-series processor.
Dr. Paul Jacobs unveiled these new quad-core engines during his keynote address on Monday, but what should strike fear into the hearts of those companies that still depend on selling conventional computing products is that the 800 series turns a smartphone into something almost as powerful as a laptop.
LAS VEGAS – Intel continued its drive into the smartphone, tablet and Ultrabook markets at CES today.
Intel unveiled its “Lexington” Atom processor for smartphones, the 7-watt Intel Core Z2760 processor for Ultrabook convertibles and its fourth generation Intel Core processors, formerly codenamed Haswell. Company executives also showed off a new 22nanometer quad core Atom system-on-a-chip processor that will be in products by the 2013 holiday season.
Santa Clara, Calif. – Intel CEO Paul Otellini said today he will step down from his position in May 2013.
Ottellini will take his final bow during the company stockholder meeting held at that time. His decision will bring to a close a 40-year career at Intel. He took over the reins as CEO in 2005.
