This TWICE webinar, hosted by senior editor Alan Wolf, will take a look at what may be the hottest CE products at retail that will be sold during the all-important fourth quarter. Top technologies, market strategies and industry trends will be discussed with industry analysts and executives.
According to industry analyst Gartner, 435 million smartphones were sold worldwide in the second quarter of 2013 alone. Smartphone theft is also on the rise: Consumer Reports said that 1.6 million phones were stolen from US consumers in 2012.
Calgary, Alberta — Apple could gain worldwide smartphone share in the second half because of the lack of innovation in high-end smartphones introduced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), investment research company Canaccord Genuity concluded.
New York – Tablets and smartphones are experiencing solid sales so far this holiday shopping season, according to Canaccord Genuity.
The firm said for November and the first part of December sales of iPad Air, mini were very strong, and it described sales as solid for the Samsung Galaxy, Amazon Kindle and Google Nexus.
Canaccord said these healthy sales will help Apple make tablet and smartphone market share gains for the fourth quarter.
New York – A new iPhone/iPod Touch app called Spotliter launched Wednesday, enabling the application of sophisticated imaging effects to videos as they are recorded.
Designed by web-tech developer Netomat, the app’s effects are triggered by tapping, pinching, swiping or sliding fingers on the mobile device’s screen.
Touch effects and filters are said to be “unique, and not available on any other iPhone video recording app.”

Chicago — Apple’s flagship iPhone 5s outsold the lower-priced 5c by more than 2-to-1 in the two weeks following their late-September launch in the U.S., Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) found in polling recent iPhone buyers.
CIRP found that 65 percent of iPhone sales were 5s models, and 27 percent were 5c models. Nine percent were legacy 4S models.
As a jaded tech reporter, my first reaction to TV coverage of the lines outside Apple Stores this morning was “Really?” Aren’t there any real stories to cover?
But viewers and even broadcasters need an occasional break from the news. And I’ll admit it: I too was curious about how long the first kid in the queue camped out for a mid-cycle iPhone upgrade.
Bentonville, Ark. — Walmart has shaved $20 off the $99 contract price of Apple’s forthcoming 16GB iPhone 5c and $10 off the $199 iPhone 5s.
The discounter began taking in-store pre-orders for the iPhone 5c this morning, in advance of the new handsets’ Sept. 20 sale date.
Walmart has also dropped the contract price of the discontinued iPhone 5 from $98 to $79 for the 16GB model, and cut $100 from the price of unlocked iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 models, to $549 and $349, respectively, for use with its Straight Talk prepaid plan.
El Segundo, Calif. – Apple’s lower cost iPhone 5c won’t spur a major increase in iPhone sales in the second half of 2013, but if Apple begins selling iPhones to China’s largest carrier, China Mobile, iPhone sales growth will accelerate, an IHS analysis found.
Although the iPhone 5c did not address the low end of the market, the phone nonetheless “represents a major departure from its [Apple’s] previous product strategy, which could improve the company’s competitiveness,” IHS said.
