San Francisco — Apple launched a major redesign and upgrade of its mobile OS for iPhones and iPads in the face of growing competition from competitors such as Samsung.

The new iOS will be available in the fall for the iPhone 4 and later for the iPad 2, iPad Mini and the fifth-generation iPod Touch.

 New York – Apple vowed to appeal a ruling by the U.S. International Trade Commission banning the company from importing and distributing older iPhones and cellular-equipped iPads, but only those models designed to operate on the AT&T network.

 The products are the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3G, iPad2 3G, and iPad 3, but only the iPhone 4 and cellular-equipped iPad 2 are currently available on the Apple and AT&T online stores, the companies’ web sites show. AT&T sells the 3G-equipped iPhone 4 for 99 cents on its website.

 New York — Windows and iOS-based smartphones are gaining sales share at a faster pace than Android smartphones, said research company Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

In addition, the research firm reported that Verizon Wireless and Sprint are gaining smartphone sales share at the expense of their two rivals.

Alpharetta, Ga. — AT&T has created a new subsidiary to market no-contract 4G wireless phone service under the Aio Wireless brand.

Aio Wireless, based here, launched service in three markets — Houston, Orlando and Tampa — and plans to roll out in multiple markets across the U.S. over the next year with a quartet of what it calls simplified, value-price plans and a variety of unsubsidized smartphones.

The service and products are available on AIO’s website and in select stores in the three markets.

Framingham, Mass. – When it comes to shipping smart connected devices, Samsung is now the worldwide champ, according to IDC.

Samsung took over the top spot from Apple by shipping 250 million such devices, defined by IDC as desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones, in 2012. Apple was not far behind, pumping out 218.7 million such products during the same period.

For the entire year, 1.2 billion smart connected devices were shipped worldwide, a 29.1 percent increase over 2011.

New York –Apple retained its lead in U.S. smartphone purchases by consumers in the fourth quarter and for the first time shipped more cellphones in the U.S. than any other vendor, two research studies show.

Although Apple’s share of unit smartphone purchases by consumers fell to 39 percent in the quarter compared with 41 percent in the year-ago quarter, the company remained ahead of number two Samsung, whose share nonetheless rose to 30 percent from a year-ago 21 percent, The NPD Group found in tracking purchases by consumes ages 18 and up.

The update, iOS version 6.1, also enables more foreign carriers to offer LTE service for the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad.
