AT&T plans April 19 availability of HTC’s flagship One Android 4.1 handset with 4G LTE at $199 for the 32GB version and $299 for the 64GB version.


Dallas — AT&T announced price and availability dates for the LTE-equipped 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet and the delayed HTC One flagship smartphone.

 The LTE-equipped version of the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD Kindle will be available through AT&T-owned stores beginning April 5, expanding distribution of the 4G LTE tablet beyond Amazon’s website.

New Smyrna Beach, Fla. — Dr. Ian Ross, the former president of Bell Laboratories who oversaw advances in transistors and microchips, died last week at his home here. He was 85.

Under his watch, Bell Labs research teams furthered field effect transistors, which became a mainstay of integrated circuits, and developed a method of growing the silicon crystals used to make super-thin semiconductor wafers, which led to a new generation of faster computers, microprocessors and switching systems.

Dallas — AT&T’s Blackberry Z10 presale begins tomorrow, preceding the official launch date of March 22, at a price of $199.

The presale will include a two-year agreement. The smartphone will be generally available for all customers, including corporate customers or those receiving a corporate discount, through all AT&T channels on March 22, the carrier said.

Dallas – AT&T activated more iPhones and more smartphones in the fourth quarter than in any previous quarter, the company announced.

The carrier sold 8.6 million iPhones in the quarter, exceeding the previous quarterly record of 7.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2011. Total smartphone activations of 10.2 million in the fourth quarter exceeded the year-ago quarter’s activations by 800,000. Sixteen percent of the quarter’s iPhone activations were new subscribers to AT&T.

Dallas – AT&T announced pricing and availability of two more 4G LTE Android smartphones, both made by HTC and one sporting a quad-core 1.7GHz processor with battery-saving fifth core.

 The quad-core phone, the HTC One X+, offers the fastest processor announced in a smartphone to date and uses the 1.7GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 4-Plus-1 processor with a battery-saving fifth core, AT&T said. The Android 4.1 JellyBean phone will also be the first smartphone in the U.S. to feature HTC Sense 4+ user interface to deliver performance improvements, the carrier said.

Dallas –AT&T will expand iPhone FaceTime video chats over cellular to more subscribers, the company announced.

The carrier “will support FaceTime not only on our Mobile Share plans but also on all of our tiered data plans with an LTE device,” a spokesman said. “We expect to roll out this functionality over the next 8-10 weeks.”

The FaceTime app also works over Wi-Fi.

New York — AT&T executives outlined a growth strategy that includes the addition of new wireless services for the home and car, including the wireless delivery of subscribers’ U-verse programming to vehicles.

The company also announced that it will expand its 4G LTE network to reach 300 million people by the end of 2014, or 50 million more than previously announced, thanks to its acquisition of new spectrum, executives said during an investors’ conference here.

A Samsung ATIV convertible tablet/laptop with Windows 8 OS and AT&T-network LTE service will be in stores Nov. 9 at $799.


Dallas – AT&T announced the pricing and availability of two new LTE-equipped tablets, both from Samsung.

The Intel-based ATIV Smart PC, which runs Windows 8 and features detachable keyboard, is priced at $799, and the 4G LTE-equipped Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with Android 4.0 is priced at $499. Both will be available Nov. 9 through AT&T stores but also through indirect retailers, a spokesperson told TWICE.

New York — Wireless carriers continue to reveal more details about their fourth-quarter product launches.

U.S. Cellular said the Galaxy Note II “phablet” will be available tomorrow at $299, Verizon said the Note II pricing at $299 with availability in the coming weeks, and Sprint revealed that it became the first carrier to offer an Android 4.1 update for the Samsung Galaxy SIII.

AT&T said Sony’s Xperia TL Android smartphone, to be featured in the next James Bond movie, will be available Nov. 2 at $99.
