San Francisco — Protection-plan company SquareTrade reported today that 20 percent of all Americans will buy a Samsung S4 smartphone.

The company added that 25 percent of those consumers will break their new phone within the first 12 months of ownership.

The SquareTrade study found that since 2007 Americans have spent $7.2 billion on damaged Android phones. In addition, people are more than 10 times more likely to damage their phone than have it stolen or lose it.

Dallas – A broad rollout of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone starts this month and runs through the summer, putting the device in the hands of seven carriers and seven national retailers at prices ranging from $149 to $249 with two-year contract.

New York — Tech21 has extended its Impactology line of smartphone and tablet protection products with the new Impact Shield, a multi-layer screen film that incorporates BulletShield impact-protection polymer.

The Impact Shield film features a hard self-healing anti-scratch layer over a harder protection inner layer developed by BASF that disperses the force of an impact by as much as 80 percent. The bottom layer is a soft film that absorbs any residual impact force.

Ridgefield Park, N.J. – Samsung Electronics launched Thursday a Wi-Fi version of its Galaxy Camera that is centered on the Android 4.1 platform.

The Samsung Wi-Fi Galaxy Camera, which ships later this month at a $450 suggested retail, is a point-and-shoot camera with an easy-to-navigate user interface and access to Android applications from the Google Play market.

An earlier version of the camera was launched with built-in 4G LTE support.

New York — Samsung took its battle for U.S. smartphone supremacy to Manhattan Island, where it unveiled a flagship product that it hopes will vault the company ahead of Apple in the U.S. smartphone market after having gained the lead in global smartphone share.

Hoping to boost sales in a smartphone market whose growth is slowing, Samsung executives took to the Radio City Music Hall stage, here, to unveil the Galaxy S4, the first phone announced to date with global 4G LTE roaming. The presentation was also broadcast live to an outdoor digital display in Times Square.

Dallas – AT&T priced the cellular-equipped Samsung Galaxy camera at $499 with or without data plan.

The Android 4.1-based point-and-shoot camera, promoted as the first cellular-connected camera, incorporates AT&T-network 4G HSPA+ cellular-data technology, enabling users to shoot, edit and share pictures and videos wirelessly through sharing on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or email without connecting to a laptop or PC. It will be available Friday, Nov. 16, through AT&T-owned stores and the carrier’s web site.

New York — Wireless carriers continue to reveal more details about their fourth-quarter product launches.

U.S. Cellular said the Galaxy Note II “phablet” will be available tomorrow at $299, Verizon said the Note II pricing at $299 with availability in the coming weeks, and Sprint revealed that it became the first carrier to offer an Android 4.1 update for the Samsung Galaxy SIII.

AT&T said Sony’s Xperia TL Android smartphone, to be featured in the next James Bond movie, will be available Nov. 2 at $99.
