NEW YORK — The fitness-monitor market geared toward smartphone users continues to expand, adding new functionality and compatibilities, as well as incorporating new technologies, to a bustling market.
Hothead Technologies will begin shipping in Q2 what it is calling “the first fitness monitor on the market to track body temperature, movement and heart rate without using a chest strap.”
AURORA, ILL. — Peerless-AV said last week it has acquired outdoor-TV manufacturer Ciil Technologies, which markets the UltraViewand Xtreme-brand weatherproof displays.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Peerless-AV said the acquisition expands its portfolio of audio/visual technologies, mounting, accessories and digital-content delivery solutions.
SAN DIEGO — Mad Catz Interactive is now taking pre-orders for its Freq7 gaming headset, although it’s not scheduled to ship until the first fiscal quarter of 2014.
The headset, which is part of Mad Catz’s GameSmart line, features Dolby Headphone technology and Dolby Pro Logic IIx technology, said to expand stereo and 5.1 audio to 7.1 surround sound. PC users are able to toggle between surround sound and stereo while gaming.
COSTA MESA, CALIF. — PowerSkin has introduced the PoP’n, an attachable external smartphone battery that sticks onto an existing case and connects via an interchangeable tip to charge any phone with a MicroUSB or Apple Lightning connector.
It is Apple MFi approved for the iPhone 5.
OXNARD, CALIF. – Scosche Industries has begun shipping wall and car chargers with the new Apple Lightning connector as well as a retractable Lightning accessory cable.
Scosche’s StrikeBase wall charger comes in 5-watt and 12-watt models with a 3-foot long cable and flushfolding outlet prongs on a low-profile plug. The 5-watt model is recommended for iPhones and iPods, with the 12-watt for iPads, but Scosche said the higher-watt model’s extra power will not damage lower-wattage iOS devices. They retail for $29.99 and $34.99, respectively.
NEW YORK — Vivitar used the American International Toy Fair, held here earlier this month, to show off its entry into the youth tablet market.
One of its first devices for the category, the Camelio tablet, was previewed during International CES in January. It features a 7-inch 800 by 400 touchscreen, Android 4.1 OS, 4GB storage, built-in Wi-Fi, USB port and built-in microphone.
Belkin Licenses Lego For Cases
PLAYA VISTA, CALIF. — Belkin announced a multi-year licensing partnership with The Lego Group to create Lego-inspired cases for mobile devices.
HUNT VALLEY, MD. — Ventev’s Wallport r2200 (pictured) is a miniaturized dual-USB rapid universal charger capable of charging two tablets simultaneously. It delivers 2.1 amps through each illuminated port, has a no-slip slate gray matte finish with orange accents and includes Chargesync flat cables in seven color choices (blue, green, orange, red, pink, white and gray). Ventev called it “the smallest wall charger on the market providing two high-powered ports.” It also folds for travel.
