IHS reported that 69 million PCs were shipped into the Chinese market last year, compared with 66 million into the U.S.
ARLINGTON, VA. — Consumers’ desire for mobility is driving sales of tablets, smartphones, e-readers and wireless mobile hot spots, according to a new study released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
The “15th Annual Household CE Ownership and Market Potential Study” also found that CE spending is up for individuals (35 percent) and households (36 percent) over the last 12 months.
NEW YORK — Gartner is forecasting double-digit worldwide growth for mobile phones, tablets and ultrathin laptops for the next four years.
The only category expected to decline during this period is desktop PCs and laptops.
The research firm reported that 2.4 billion connected devices will ship this year, up from 2.2 billion in 2012. This figure will climb to 2.6 billion by 2014 and hit 2.96 billion by 2017.
FRAMINGHAM, MASS. – More than 1 billion smart connected devices shipped worldwide in 2012, a 29.1 percent increase, according to IDC’s “Smart Connected Device Tracker” report.
The category, which encompasses desktop PCs, notebooks, tablets and smartphones, will continue its hockey-stick-growth curve, with shipments hitting 2.2 billion by 2017. This is expected to generate about $814 billion in revenue, up from $576.9 billion in 2012.
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. – Internet radio listening is gaining among people ages 13 to 35, and AM/ FM listening is declining, The NPD Group found in a consumer survey.
But the two music-delivery technologies are still neck-and-neck in the amount of time that the age group spends listening to music.
NPD also reported a decline in the amount of time that consumers listen to CDs and digital music files.
NEW YORK — PC gaming is alive, performing well and growing, according to a report from the PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA).
The PCGA-commissioned report, which was compiled by Jon Peddie Research (JPR) and DFC Intelligence, and called the “PCGA Pinnacle Report,” contained data on hardware, software, player spending habits and system preferences.
LONDON — Revenue generated by apps developed for tablets will surpass that generated for smartphones by 2018, according to ABI Research.
The research firm said for 2013 total revenue for tablet apps will be $8.8 billion, compared with $16.4 billion for smartphones. Apple iOS will account for 65 percent of the share; Android will get 27 percent, and 8 percent is projected to be shared by the remaining mobile platforms.
FRAMINGHAM, MASS. — IDC is forecasting that Android- based tablets will take over as the market share leader from Apple iOS in 2013 and maintain this lead going forward.
IDC also upped its worldwide tablet shipment numbers to 190.9 million, from 172.4 million, due to the increased volume of smaller-screen-size tablets expected to hit the market this year. IDC expects at least 350 million tablets to ship by 2017.
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. – Share of the $1.3 billion video-on-demand (VOD) revenue generated by multichannel video programming distributors (MVPD) in 2012 continued to be dominated by cable-TV operators, with 56 percent of the overall market, according to report issued Monday by The NPD Group.
NPD’s “2012 VideoWatch VOD Report” showed satellite-TV operators ranked second, with 27 percent share, while telecom operators had 18 percent through the year.
FRAMINGHAM, MASS. – The rest of the world with catch up with the U.S. in 2012 when global shipments of smartphones will exceed feature-phone shipments for the first time, IDC forecast.
In the U.S., smartphones first outsold feature phones in 2011, with the first quarter of that year marking the first quarter that smartphones dominated, the research and consulting company said.
