TV Manufacturers Cutting Back On Advertising, Gap Study Shows

SAN DIEGO – The pace of retail print advertising got off to a slow start in 2014 with nearly 200 fewer TV ads placed in the first quarter than the same period the previous year. This represents a 12 percent decrease in retail circular advertisements, according to research by Gap Intelligence.

Very few brands increased their advertising count in Q1, although those that did often increased by a wide amount. Vizio posted the largest advertising increase, with 68 percent more ads placed than Q1 2013, followed by TCL with 55 percent and Sony with 49 percent.

BrandSource Keynoter Paints Bright Economic Picture

BrandSource Keynoter Paints Bright Economic Picture

ORLANDO, FLA. — It is rare when any business organization invites the same person to keynote an annual event in back-to-back years, but that is just what BrandSource did for when it invited Joe Higgins to speak again at its Summit & Expo last month, here.

The reason why the recently retired (March 2013) Whirlpool exec (now a public speaker and consultant) was invited back was that so many of his economic forecasts about 2013 for GDP, unemployment, appliance sales, the stock market and housing starts were right on the money.

Premium Headphones Thank Healthy Consumers For 21% Growth: NPD

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The premium U.S. headphone market jumped 21 percent in sales in 2013, The NPD Group said, spurred in part by a rise in fitness-related features.

Premium headphones, which are models that cost $100 or more, surpassed $1 billion for the year. The stereo headphones market, meanwhile, grew 11 percent to $2.3 billion in 2013.

Study Shows Low Awareness Of Ultra HD TV

DURHAM, N.H. — Although 77 percent of all U.S. households now have at least one HDTV set, and 46 percent have more than one, only 30 percent of U.S. adults have heard of the newer Ultra HD TV technology and only one-third of them have ever seen one.

The findings were part of a Leichtman Research Group study released earlier this month, indicating the consumer electronics industry has its work cut out in bringing the public up to Ultra HD speed.

Connected Consumer Creates Marketing Challenges: Report

NEW YORK – Marketers and advertisers must find new ways to engage the hyper-connected consumer, who now comprises nearly half the U.S. adult population.

According to a new study by brand strategy consultants Vivaldi Partners, 48 percent of these “always on” consumers own at least three connected devices, and use them to go online multiple times a day from at least three different locations.

NPD: Use Of Cellular-Connected Tablets Growing

NPD: Use Of Cellular-Connected Tablets Growing

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. – Tablets with embedded cellular modems accounted for a shrinking share of retail-level U.S. tablet sales in 2013, yet the installed base of tablets with an embedded modem and active cellular subscription grew by 46 percent, The NPD Group found.

The company attributed the installed-base growth to the launch of carrier’s data-share plans, which reduce the relative cost of powering cellular-capable tablets, NPD told TWICE. In the past, many consumers purchased cellular-equipped tablets but didn’t activate them, NPD said.
