LONDON — The worldwide A/V headphones market will grow 9 percent this year, according to Futuresource Consulting, with revenue hitting $8.2 billion and 284 million units shipped.
According to the research firm, Beats Electronics captured 23 percent of global revenue. Taking 45 percent of global shipments were five brands that Rasika Iyer, Futuresource research analyst, called “traditional headphones brands”: Philips, Sony, JVC, Sennheiser and Skullcandy.

EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. — In a sign that the global flatpanel TV market likely will not see growth in 2013, a new study from IHS said shipments of flat-panel televisions fell for the second month in row in July on a worldwide basis compared with the same period year ago.
The combined global shipments in July of LCD and plasma TVs amounted to 14.88 million units, down 6.3 percent from July 2012, according to the “Monthly Worldwide FPD TV Shipment Data Report” from the TV Systems Intelligence Service at IHS.
SAN DIEGO – Televisions priced at $1,000 or less currently make up 70 percent of retail shelf placements, according to recent findings by retail market research firm Gap Intelligence. The firm said that more than 80 percent of TVs in stores are now priced at $1,500 or less.

The research firm’s latest end-user survey of tablet owners found that these folks now place design and price over manufacturer when picking out a product. The survey comprised 728 tablet owners in the U.S., U.K. and Australia.
These results greatly differ from Gartner’s last end-user survey in 2011, when brand was the leading factor behind purchase. Brand is now ranked third in importance.
FRAMINGHAM, MASS. – Stockings will be stuffed with tablets this Christmas, according to IDC.
The research firm expects tablet shipments to surpass the combined total of laptops and desktops for the fourth quarter of 2013. PCs will retain their leadership position for the full year and 2014, but IDC is forecasting that tablets will surpass PCs on an annual basis by 2015.
ENGLEWOOD, COLO. — Global smart-watch shipments are likely to be limited in the near term, according to a preliminary forecast issued by IHS.
Shipments are expected to reach 268,000 in 2013, and will hit 2.6 million units in 2014. In the longer term, shipments are expected to reach much higher volumes, with units rising to nearly 39 million units in 2018, the research firm said.

ARLINGTON, VA. — Consumer confidence toward technology spending rose in August, but sentiment toward the overall economy dropped, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
The CEA Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE), which measures consumer expectations about technology spending, increased by 1 point in August to 87.2. This is the highest point it has reached in 2013.
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, ILL. — Consumer satisfaction with their cellular purchase experience through carrier-direct channels rose among all four national contract carriers in the first half compared with the second half of 2012, a J.D. Power survey found.
AT&T’s customer satisfaction rose the most, putting the carrier in the top spot for the first time in the survey’s 10-year history.
